Bristol Aquarium

On Friday James' parents flew down for the long weekend and since we were in Bristol to pick them up we decided to have a day out. It was a tough decision choosing between Bristol Zoo or Bristol Aquarium but since the rain was on and off we felt that in doors was better and the Aquarium it was. Located at Bristol Harbourside it was relatively easy to find using our SatNav and the entrance fees were pretty well priced at £14.50 each (children under 3 are free).

Upon entering we began to explore life under the ocean with the first lot of displays all about UK water marine life. The displays were well lit and clean and there were lots of information about the creatures you could see. Perfect for teaching children all about the different sea life and for teaching us Adults too. As we walked round there were so many different animals to look at, crabs, lobster, eels, sharks, so many different species of fish and even turtles.

There were 8 themed areas, UK waters, Sharks, Urban Jungle, A learning lab, Mighty Amazon, Coral Seas and an underwater tunnel. Each area had animals from different regions and it was great learning about them all and the different areas they inhabit. We weren't sure when we went how much Ailsa would get out of it with only being 13 months old but she thoroughly enjoyed looking at all the different fish, especially the seahorses and the turtles. All 4 adults had a great time too and was so much better than we thought. It took us just under 2 hours to get round which was just long enough for us and Ailsa didn't get too grumpy. You could however make your time there last longer by attending the talks throughout the aquarium that happen through the day. We decided not to do this as Ailsa wouldn't have stayed still long enough although I am sure in a couple of years she would enjoy it.

Ailsa was very much intrigued and I think we will look to go back in the near future. The aquarium is very accessible for prams and wheelchair users. We had Ailsa in the sling for the first little while but it was easier for her to be carried and practice her walking most of the way around so she could get up close to the displays and see what was happening.

If you are in the area the Aquarium is definitely worth checking out and was thoroughly enjoyable. There's lots of restaurants nearby too which is perfect for heading out for lunch after. We can't wait to go back.
