Baby Led Weaning| Update

So we have been weaning Ailsa for almost 2 months now and she has finally started to take to it so well. We had a bit of a blip last month as Ailsa was so ill with a cold and virus that we felt it was best to cut back on the solids, which she wasn't overly interested in, and focus on me giving her as much breastmilk as she wanted to help fight off the illness. Since she got better though we have gone full throttle with the solids introducing lots of new foods and full meals. She now eats around 2 meals a day plus a few snacks here and there. We are still working on her being interested in breakfast but at the moment she feeds from me an awful lot in the morning which I think is filling her up enough to get her through to lunch time.

We have introduced different known allergens such as peanut butter and egg and so far there have been no reactions, Since there are no allergies in our immediate family we felt comfortable introducing these foods but I would recommend discussing with your health visitor if someone in the immediate family has an allergy before trying those foods with baby.

So far I think Ailsa's favourite food was her Daddy's homemade pizza which she wolfed down. It was so lovely to see her enjoy something so much and it is fab since we love pizza in our house. Toast with different toppings, such as Avocado, Hummus and cream cheese, is also very popular. For dinners I still mainly give vegetable and maybe a boiled egg for protein. We have tried her with bits of chicken which she quite enjoyed. The idea of baby led weaning is to give baby what you are eating so you don't need to cook extra food which we are trying to do only we eat an awful lot of spicy food so we will pop some extra veg on.

Overall Baby led weaning is working so well for us. Ailsa really enjoys it and we can see her learning to chew her food, work it around her mouth and swallow. We sometimes find she gags a little but not a much as she did at the start. We haven't had an choking incidents which I am very please about as I think it would scare the life out of me if we did. I would most definitely recommend this type of weaning and it is worth reading up on it if you are interested. The Gill Rapley book is an excellent resource.
