Nappy rash is pretty unavoidable and most babies will get it at some point whilst still in nappies. When Ailsa was around 5 months she started teething quite badly which caused some very horrible nappies and one day she started to develop nappy rash. So I got on the internet to do some research and also called a friend with 2 little girls for some advice. I now have my nappy rash treatment essentials which I am sharing with you below.
Cotton Wool and Water
For bum changes I like to go back to basics when Ailsa has nappy rash. Using plain water and cotton wool is the most gentle on stingy skin. Luckily Ailsa doesn't have sensitive skin so I normally just use whichever wipes are on offer but they tend to sting when her skin is a little red. I like to use the square cotton wool pads rather than cotton wool balls I find that they clean a larger surface area and found I referred them when Ailsa was a newborn.
When I am out and about I like to use water wipes. They are so gentle and only contain water and 0.1% fruit extract so are the next best thing to water and cotton wool. They are also really nice and wet so clean the skin nicely. I do find I need to leave it a minute or 2 for the skin to dry before popping cream on.
This stuff is amazing! I was recommended this by several friends for treating a sore bottom and by jolly does this stuff work. Only the smallest amount is needed to cover the whole area and within a day or so the nappy rash has pretty much cleared up. Word of warning it does smell quite bad but I can look past it for how awesome it is.
Bepanthen is fab for creating a barrier between the skin and the irritants. I like to use it with most nappy changes to help protect the delicate skin.
Nappy free time
I like to do this before every bath for at least 10-15 minutes so that Ailsa has her nappy off regularly. When she has nappy rash though I like to do it that bit more, so I crank up the heating and get lots of towels out so she can roll around naked to her hearts content.
So there you have it our nappy rash treatment essentials. Is there anything else you would recommend?
