Buying the right monitor for your family is not an easy task as there are so many on the market - do you go with the basic kind or one with all the bells and whistles you could ever need? In the end we decided to go with a sound monitor with a movement sensor mat. I'm the type of person who checks their baby is breathing a million times a night (especially when one night she didn't wake for her 1am feed and slept through till 4am). Having the sensor pad has given James and myself the peace of mind to know that Ailsa is OK and we can still see her if we wake in the night.
The main things we were looking for in our monitor were:-
1. A sensor mat
2. Sound
3. 2 parent units, so that when Ailsa goes into her own room we can have one in the living room and one in our bedroom
After a couple of weeks of scouring the Internet and looking at reviews we decided to get the Angelcare Movement and Sound monitor AC401 Deluxe. We picked ours up from Amazon.

Angelcare AC401 Deluxe Movement and Sound Monitor |
The Under-mattress sensor pad sounds an alarm if no movement has been felt for 20 seconds- which I have found out does work at 2am when getting Ailsa out of her crib and forgetting to turn the base unit off- This is such a useful feature if you are a worried parent and scared that baby will stop breathing. Both my husband and I would constantly check that Ailsa was breathing before getting the monitor.
We got ours with 2 parent units which not everyone would need but will work for our house once Ailsa is in her own room. I have used one of our parent units so far when Ailsa has taken a nap in our bedroom and I need to run down and pop a wash on or I can quickly get my breakfast before she wakes. I was able to hear her stir and go up for her before she got upset. The monitor is good in that it doesn't transmit static and you only get sound when it picks up noise. One downside of this is that it is quite sensitive to noise and as we had the windows open as it was so warm outside it would pick up the noise of the cars outside. Although this makes me quite confident that it will pick up the smallest of noise that Ailsa makes.
The monitor itself has a number of great features which we haven't used yet but are all listed over on the Angelcare Website or Amazon.
So far we are really loving using this monitor and will get so much use out of it once Ailsa goes into her own room. I have even recommended this to a friend who is due in December.
